Crisis: Nobel Laureates Respond to 9/11

The Community was the online home of the Nobel laureates after 9/11. The world was listening.

In the days following 9/11, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and then Foreign Minister of East Timor José Ramos-Horta contacted his fellow laureates and asked them to send their statements on the atrocity to Mary Wald for publication. Mary gathered the responses and published them on TheCommunity.com, with photos from renowned photographer Michael Collopy.

When the Associated Press ran an article, it was The Community’s international debut. The site was talked about on NPR, on the CNN morning show; it was covered by the Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Malaysia New Straits Times, Hong Kong Morning Post, and others around the world.

It was selected the number two site of the year in USA Today’s top ten sites of the year, and was included in the US Library of Congress archive on 9/11.
